NEDA The single of this piece (studio recorded) is now available at I tunes and amazonmp3. I was in our home at Maleny in June working on compositions for this concert. I got up early to write but just couldnt find my work convincing so I went out for a coffee. I read in the paper about Neda Agha Sultan who was murdered by a Basij militia sniper in Iran during the June protests. She was shot while out of her car taking refuge from the heat. She was a music student and a pianist. Affected as I was by her senseless death, I began to hear the Persian melody type of Dashti and, after returning to compose, I wrote this piece calling on her spirit and that of my executed Bahai friend Ehsan Mehdizadeh who was shot in 1981 in Shiraz for his beliefs. Currently 7 Bahais face execution in Iran for their faith. The piece gathers three styles or genres of music in one, for me, symbolic of the fellowship of humanity in positive reaction to oppression. The first section uses heavy metal chords in a flamenco voice. The second section is the Dashtistyle song and I invite the audience to join us singing the refrain on this. A third section is neo-classical in nature representing Nedas study. The whole piece is a song for all who are oppressed and is thus a lament with expressions of hope and challenge. The imagery in the texts uses the sparrow as symbol for the life we so rarely engage with, but miss when it is gone. Neda translates as the voice or call (usually of God) so the refrain ...
