San Esteban (griego Stephanos, corona) fue diácono y protomártir, considerado el primer mártir cristiano. La figura de San Esteban se encuadra a principios del siglo II dC, momento en el que el Cristianismo era considerado una secta más del Judaísmo. Según los Hechos de los Apóstoles, Esteban era el líder de los siete diáconos nombrados por los apóstoles en defensa de los judíos helenistas, esto es, aquellos judíos de la diáspora que hablaban griego a pesar de vivir en Jerusalén. Desde esta posición, Esteban denunciará las preferencias que la Iglesia daba a los judíos hebreos frente a los judíos helenistas, condenando a su vez el uso del Templo de Jerusalén como asiento de la idolatría contraria a la Ley de Moises y afirmando que sólo Cristo estaba llamado a espiritualizar el culto del templo. Estas ideas chocarán con los intereses materiales de la casta sacerdotal y con las creencias del pueblo judío, lo que acabará incomodando a los fariseos de algunas sinagogas, quienes acusarán a Esteban ante el Sanedrín de blasfemia contra Moisés y contra Yahveh. La asamblea lo considerará culpable y Esteban será lapidado a las afueras de Jerusalén mientras, según la tradición, este oraba por sus verdugos, diciendo: "Señor, no les tomes en cuenta este pecado". Entre los participantes se encontrará el futuro San Pablo, aunque las fuentes nos dicen que aparentemente no participó en el apedreamiento, sino que se limitó a cuidar la ropa de los que lo hacían.
