The San Anton Gardens in Malta and the Palace were built by Grand Master Antoine de Paule (1623 -1636) and were opened to the public in 1882. The Palace today is the residence of the President of Malta. These gardens were the favorite gardens of the Maltese famous Folkloristic singer, Frans Baldacchino, nicknamed Il-Budaj. Besides a singer, Frans was a poet, author, painter and sculptor and is known for his peaceful character and charitable heart. Frans died in 2006 at the age of 63. The song which you hear is called: "Il-Gmiel tan-Natura" (The Beauty of Nature). It was composed and sung by himself and its full of praise to the Almighty for the beautiful Nature He has given us and whom he calls: "The Engineer of the Universe". We dedicate this video to the memory of Frans, a very dear friend of ours. Photos all taken by Choy Hong (Jasmine) Grech. Video by Alfred & Choy Hong (Jasmine) Grech, Mosta, Malta. We visited the Fruit Festival on April 3, 2011 which was held at the San Anton Gardens and made some video recordings of the activities. The Festival was organized by the Attard and the Balzan Local Councils, Malta, in collaboration with FrottArtna, in aid of the Community Chest Fund. This video only covers some of the activities and entertainment held at the Festival. The footage also includes the general view of the 2 gardens ie a public gardens and the Palaces Gardens (private). Brief history of San Anton Gardens: The Palace which is now the official residence of the Maltese President, was built by Grand Master Antoine de Paule (1623 -1636). He laid out an extensive garden with numerous fruit and ornamental trees; and he named his new domain San Anton, to perpetuate his own name. Grand Masters de Vilhena and de Rohan enlarged the Palace, and the former built the Chapel of Our Lady of the Pilar. At a later time, British Governors built the arcaded verandah beneath the turret, and made San Anton their private home. The palace has several spacious halls decorated with paintings and objects of fine art. In 1798, when the Maltese revolted against the French regime, the Palace was the meeting place for the local insurgents. Later, Sir Alexander Ball, who commanded the allied troops, made it his Headquarters. After the surrender of the French, the treaty of capitulation was signed in the Palace. In 1977 a low budget action film written by screen writer Paul Schrader ("Taxi Driver", "American Gigolo", & "Hardcore"), was released starring William DeVane and a fairly unknown actor named Tommy Lee Jones. The "Death Wish" style actioner developed a cult following and is a favorite of film director Quentin Tarantinos. The theme song "San Anton" was performed by singer Denny Brooks and is quite a rare recording. The song from the film is included here in its entirety, along with some stills from the movie. I hope you enjoy this tribute.
