Tagaste, hoy Souk Ahras, a unas 60 millas de Bona (la antigua Hippo-Regius), era por aquel tiempo una ciudad pequeña y libre de la Numidia preconsular que se había convertido recientemente del donatismo. Su familia no era rica aunque sí eminentemente respetable, y su padre, Patricio, uno de los decuriones de la ciudad, todavía era pagano; sin embargo, las admirables virtudes que hicieron de Mónica el ideal de madre cristiana consiguieron, a la larga, que su esposo recibiera la gracia del bautismo y una muerte santa, alrededor del año 371. Agustín recibió una educación cristiana. Su madre hizo que fuera señalado con la cruz e inscrito entre los catecúmenos. Una vez, estando muy enfermo pidió el bautismo pero pronto pasó todo peligro y difirió recibir el sacramento, cediendo así a una deplorable costumbre de la época. Su asociación con "hombres de oración" dejó profundamente grabadas en su alma tres grandes ideas La Divina Providencia, la vida futura con terribles sanciones y, sobre todo, Cristo Salvador. San Agustín es sin duda una de las figuras más grandes de la historia del Cristianismo. Más de 1600 años después de su muerte, su vida salta a la televisión. Se llama Agustín: La caída del Imperio Romano. Es una mini-serie realizada por productoras de Italia, Polonia y Alemania. Uno de los temas más conmovedores de la película es cómo su madre, Santa Mónica, influyó en su conversión al Catolicismo. Monica Guerritore Santa Monica Santa Mónica tenía una visión muy clara de lo que Agustín podría llegar a lograr en su vida, estaba segura. Creo que es ésta la iluminación, la luz que ella tenía y el peso que sigue teniendo en la historia. Mónica Guerritore dice que como actriz, fue una experiencia única poder interpretar el papel de Santa Mónica en una producción como ésta. A ride along the Crosby area foreshore from Hall Road, Blundellsands to Seaforth Rocks then down the side of the Marine lake to the start of the new mural being painted on the dock estate. Entry from: Popayan, La Plata, San Augustin and Silvia, Colombia Entry Title: "Highland Hijinx" Entry: "After a smog choking week in Bogota, desperate for fresh air we took a day long bus ride to Popayan in the south of the country. Short bus rides are a thing of the past. We travelled through the Andes for the first time, no snow peaks yet, and through the majestic coffee growing valleys of southern Colombia. We spent most of the journey hanging out the windows gawping at the views. The journey was incredible, some of the best scenery we have seen so far, which is saying something. Unfortunatley taking piccies from a bumpy bus is quite a feat so our photos probably dont do the scenery the justice it deserves. Bus drivers dont take to kindly to being asked to stop on mountain passes for a gringo photo opportunity. Popayan was a really nice place to chill out for a few days, using it as base to explore. We visited the mountain village of Silvia for the famous Wednesday indiginous market. It is one of the biggest gatherings of indigenous people Colombia. They all still wear typical dress of bright blues and pinks and bowler hats. A fantastic sight. We did our classic of looking at the Lonely Planet map and thinking we would take a short bus ride to visit some thermal springs near La Plata, about 100km ...

The ruins were really cool, if not a little strange. Im not sure what they were all about, but they were the impetus for the visit to San Augustin. Anyways, I liked the ruins. But the best part about San Augustin was the horse to person ratio. In San Augustin, it seemed like everyone had their own horse. At least one. Actually, it seems like a lot of people had more than one horse. Someone would be riding a horse, and leading another horse by the reins. And the horses were not just for riding. Oh no. Most of the horses in San Augustin were rigged up to some sort of contraption that they pulled around with them. A lot of times it was a wooden plank where its owners could sit under the shade of an umbrella and drive the horse around. Or the plank behind the horse was loaded up with stuff, fruits and veggies, bags of flour, or tanks of gas, and the owner just walked along side it. In the streets horses always had the right of way, and all the towns men were clad in cowboy hats and ponchos, just in case you couldnt tell this was cowboy territory."
