Dusty, hot, authentic western rodeo in New Mexico. Each year I shoot this rodeo I think it cant get any hotter and dustier but this year took the cake! 97 degrees and major dust. My hats off to these tough cowboys and the way they risk life and limb for little or no payout. It is their way of life and one that is quickly vanishing. Rodeo de Galisteo is one of the few remaining rodeos that is a true representation of the American rodeo and the rodeo heritage. The Galisteo Rodeo has been in existence for 38 years. The Cimarron Sky-Dog Reserve is a non-profit horse sanctuary based in the Galisteo Basin near Cerrillos, New Mexico. In 2007 an oil company from Texas filed for a permit to drill for oil in this fragile and historic place with hopes to turn the area, just south of Santa Fe, into a productive oil field. A fight between the citizens of the area and the powerful oil and gas industry began which led to a halt in drilling... for now. With new politicians set to take up residence in the Round-house who have ties to the oil and gas industry, New Mexico may soon be under siege by outside oil and gas companies wanting to buy up mineral rights around the state and drill in some of New Mexicos most beautiful and ecologically sensitive areas. This is an ode to the Galisteo Basin and a plea for people to stay vigilant and keep up the fight to save New Mexico from becoming one of Americas oil and gas sacrificial zones.
