Cala Higuera (Fig Tree Cove?) is a VERY sheltered cove less than 2kms from San Jose. There are a couple of rocky beaches and in practice the Northern of the two beaches gets the most usage. Because it is sheltered by the mountain to the North it can be calm in Higuera when all other nearby beaches are suffering from heavy surf. This makes it particularily good for snorkelling. The northern beach only has a very few comfortable flat spots to place your bum, so if it is busy you are going to have to sit on the rocks and pebbles. There always seem to be at least one nudist on the beach and more often a few of them. As with all the non-town beaches in Cabo de Gata, the nudists and non nudists seem to be perfectly happy co-existing on the same beaches. You will see the dismasted yacht in the video. There was a fierce storm on 24 Aug 2007 which sank a number of small boats moored off San Jose harbour and also wrecked the floating bathing platform. This particular yacht broke it moorings off Higuera and floated off to the beach in San Jose just below El Pirata bar (brilliant burgers). I watched its final moments in the storm before it washed ashore near some rocks and got involved with the operation to use a jeep to drag it to safety further up the beach. Apparently some RIBs were used to drag it back out to sea over the shallow sandy bottom. www.flickr.com It still needs fixing up. The original rescue operation pulled off the two forward mooring kleats.

At only 50 metres over my head, over the rocks, there were a huge number of people. It was July 2010 in the paradise of Cabo de Gata (Almería - Spain). They were looking for the paradise but they didn´t find it, because paradise run away from places where people is over-crowded. At the same time lots of fishes looked at me under the marine caves, as if they said: "Is this man edible"?. Obviously I wasn´t edible, so finally we made a nice friendship, and they allowd me to take these nice images for all of you. Do you dare to discover CABO DE GATA with us? Cala Enmedio is as good a beach as you are going to find in Cabo de Gata. My two top beaches are Cala San Pedro and Cala Enmedio, and I guess San Pedro wins just. because of the atmosphere there. We walked there from Agua Amarga, stayed sometime and then moved on to Cala Plomo before returning to Agua Amarga. The start of our walk was the main carpark at the southern end of the Playa de Agua Amarga. Along the southern edge of that car park a number of small roads lead up the hill. You must take the third road back from the beach. You can drive up a short way before seeing the sign with a walker on it and "200m". It is a rather rocky track from here, but we took our car the last 200m upwards to the end of the track to the point where the path begins. It is steep and rocky and hot at first as you climb up to the ridge. After a short while you are treated to the first views of Cala Enmedio, and as soon as we saw the view we knew that is where we wanted to go. It is beautiful. Working our way down the very steep hillside, the going gets better the further down you go. This walk is definitely for training shoes not beach sandals or flip-flops. The beach was tranquil, hardly anyone around and most people were naked. We spent a few hours there and did some snorkelling along the southern edge of the beach where there is a vertical wall of rock about 3m to 4m tall under the water to snorkel along. Very good snorkelling. Although we were enjoying our stay very much, we did want to ...

Inspired by Almeria this music was composed and performed by Sardinia born London based Davide Sanna and will appear on his new album due out this year. I added some video clips showing various views of Almeria from the clear sea water to the dusty badlands of Tabernas. I hope that you enjoy it.
