7 Wonders of India: Agra Fort

05:08 Minutos
Agra Fort is one of the most important and robustly built stronghold of the Mughals, embellished with number of richly decorated buildings encompassing the imposing Mughal style of art and architecture. The fort, semi-circular on plan, is surrounded by a 21.4 m high fortification wall. It was re-constructed by the third Mughal emperor Akbar on the remains of an ancient site known as Badalgarh. Some 4000 builders daily worked on it and it was completed in eight years. The great Mughals Babur, Humayun, Akbar, Jehangir, Shah Jahanand Aurangzeb lived here, and the country was governed from here. It contained the largest state treasury and mint. It was visited by foreign ambassadors, travellers and the highest dignitaries who participated in the making of history in India.

Agra, India - After a visit to the Taj, we run the gauntlet

02:54 Minutos
Join FatBellyTraveler.com as it makes a visit to the snake charmers, gets up close & personal with a few cobras, and successfully evades the onslaught of trinket sellers by using every excuse-in-the-book, which inadvertently "keeps them coming at ya." Persistence is the name of the game here and no one seems to give "up" or "in" easily. No doubt that ones view of love, life and architecture, will ever be the same after a visit to the Taj Mahal, but outside the gates of the Taj ones view will be indelibly changed as well. The Taj Mahal, in Agra, India was built by the fifth Mughal emperor, Shah Jahan in 1631 in memory of his second wife, Mumtaz Mahal. It is such a monument of love and passion that many would agree with the romantic quote below. "The picture of Taj Mahal does not adequately convey the legend, the poetry and the romance that shroud what Rabindranath Tagore calls "a teardrop on the cheek of time". Taj Mahal means "Crown Palace" and is in fact the most well preserved and architecturally beautiful tomb in the world. It is best described by the English poet, Sir Edwin Arnold, as "Not a piece of architecture, as other buildings are, but the proud passions of an emperors love wrought in living stones." It is a celebration of woman built in marble and thats the way to appreciate it." ----Neeraj Peswani All in a days journey, where potential adventure lurks at every corner with FatBellyTraveler.com.

The Road To Agra

06:03 Minutos
A short documentary exploring the culture-shock of competitors arriving in Agra, India, for Microsofts Imagine Cup 2006. Our task was to create a completely new film based on the theme "The Imagine Cup Experience" in 36 hours or less. The theme was given to us shortly after we arived in Agra and then we had to create the concept, shoot the film, and edit and polish it before the 36hr time limit was up. This film in combination with "The Loot" (look at my other videos) earned my team a third place finish in the competition. www.cardboardboxfilms.com

Entry from: Agra, India Entry Title: "Taj Mahal..." Entry: "June 7th Agra Agra is about 200 Km from Delhi and has a somewhat dodgy reputation, it is synonymous with the Taj Mahal but its nickname of Agro describes the city perfectly. True to form we were constantly hassled by people wanting to sell us everything from water, bus tickets, and vegetables to silks and accommodation. By now we had become hardened to Indian hawkers, touts, and their sales tecniques but for anyone arriving fresh off the plane it must be bewildering! Our Hotel was one of the worst we stopped in, (just tollerable for 10GBP per night) like a lot of hotels in India from the outside they appear quite reasonable but a few steps inside soon change your oppinion. The general thinking seems to be, cram a many rooms as you can into your hotel regardless of wether you can service them or organise anything properly. The standard of rooms for the money you pay varies wildly but we found that overall to get a room (that we were prepared to stay in) was more expensive than say China (or the standard of room was lower for the same money). Our first stop in the early afternoon was to be Agras Fort, construction started in 1565 by the Mughal Emperor Akbar (whos grandson eventually built the Taj Mahal). It is a massive red sandstone ...
